Reading Workshop
Reading Workshop is a balanced approach to teaching reading that gives children long stretches of time to grow as readers as they:
* read, read, and reread a range of "just right" texts.
* read independently, with partners, in small groups & with the whole group
* have opportunities to talk and write about their reading.
* receive individualized instruction from the teacher.
Mini-Lesson 10-15 minutes
A short lesson around a specific learning target that equips students with a reading strategy the practice and use that day and everyday forward.
Learning Targets are translated into "I Can..." statements so children can easily verbalize what they are learning.
Workshop 30 minutes
Children engage in reading and talking about books:
* Reading to self
* Reading with partners
* Reading with teachers
-individual conferring
-small group guided reading
* Listen to Reading
* Work Work
Independent Practice
The Daily 5 is the name of the management tool used to make 5 small groups of students, while at the same time practicing 5 essential aspects of reading: Read to Self, Partner Read, Word Work, Listening to Reading, and Work on Writing/Response to Literature. While the teacher meets with a small group or is conferring, the remaining students in the class are reading in one of these 5 ways. This time is also important because of its differentiation. Each student has a book bin containing books based on their interests, and best of all, their independent and instructional reading levels. In their book bins, each child has important resources such as bookmarks, whisper phones, and their individualized Snap Word list. Your child will rotate through each station each week.
Individualized Snap Word lists will also help differentiate your child's word work and will help your child become a stronger reader and writer.
Guided Reading
I will works with a small group of students who need similar reading instruction. Each student has their own text and I will work with each group to target a specific reading strategy or skill. Look for the book bags that your child will bring home to reinforce your child's reading skill. There will be a form in the bag to help your child as they read their books to you.
Conferring
Conferring with students is a powerful tool for finding out what students are thinking as well as the strategies they are employing. Here are some benefits of conferring:
Each conference is about 5-10 minutes and I use a conferring notebook to record all of my conferences with my students. This notebook has a tab for each student which contains a goal, dates of meetings, my observations, and my teaching points for that meeting.
Share Time 10 minutes
An important closure to Reading Workshop when the class gathers together to
share the strategies they used during independent reading or share their reflections/understandings gained about new strategies.

Conferring with students is a powerful tool for finding out what students are thinking as well as the strategies they are employing. Here are some benefits of conferring:
- Develop a close relationship with each student
- Take opportunities for affirming
- Check for understanding
- Evaluate student growth
- Hear students read orally
- Gather ideas for mini-lessons
- Take advantage of teachable moments
