Writers Workshop
Mini-Lesson
A mini-lesson is a focus lesson that is about 10-15 minutes and may be procedural, literal/craft, or strategy/skill lessons for writing. Often times, we will use a book that demonstrates a craft or skill that we are learning. The teacher may also model a specific strategy or the class may edit or write a piece interactively.
Independent Writing
During our independent writing time, the lights will be dimmed, classical music will play in the background, and students will be in their writing bubble; the whole class will be writing independently. This is a time for students to apply the strategies learned during mini-lessons and small group lessons.
Conferring
While students are writing independently, I will be conferring with students.
Each conference is about 5-10 minutes and I use a conferring notebook to record all of my conferences with my students. This notebook has a tab for each student which contains a goal, dates of meetings, my observations, and my teaching points for that meeting.
Share Time
Share time is when the class comes back together and students share the strategies they used during independent writing time or share their reflections/understandings gained about new strategies.
